A trip to the beach in New York City normally means a long, trundling subway ride. For once, this was not the case last Friday night when the beach came to Astor Place.
Always a neighborhood to challenge convention and stretch boundaries, the Astor Place Black Tar Beach Party with Nona Hendryx proved to be no exception! The photos tell the story!
Joe’s Pub and Astor Place joined forces to present two hours of incredible funk rock hosted by revolutionary art-rock and new-wave goddess, Nona Hendryx.
Joining Nona Hendryx were special guests The Mamafunk Band, DJ Bill Coleman, Black Baywatch Dancers (choreographed by Brian Harlan), and Sophia Ramos. As well as incredible music, many of the songs also featured a powerful and important commentary on the social and political issues of our times.
Despite the relentless rain, occasional clap of thunder and special party lighting effects from the heavens the show went on! Driven by the infectious energy of Nona and her guests, hundreds of revelers danced through the rain, evoking a festival like atmosphere.
Adding to the mix was a dance contest featuring six participants demonstrating their finest moves to the beats of DJ Bill Coleman.
Our huge thanks to all the performers and everyone who came out to party in wet and wild conditions! In true New York spirit, the show was literally unstoppable!
The Black Tar Beach Party was presented by the Village Alliance and Joe’s Pub who will be teaming up again on September 22 for an afternoon of free music and dance on Astor Place! Check back on Astor Place social media for further details!
